About this book
The title page credits Fields of Victory to Mrs. Humphry Ward, with illustrations, a colored map and a folding statistical chart, and gives the year 1919. The contents list includes chapters titled France Under the Armistice and America in France, among others. The introduction, which begins with the date May 26th, says it is a bold thing, the writer fears, to offer the public yet more letters based on a journey through the battle-fields of France.
The text says one of the French Ministers has lately said that France has lost three millions of population, men, women, and children, through the war. The writer says seven thousand men lie buried in the vast military cemetery of Châlons. The text says the Englishman, when emotion compels him, speaks more readily in poetry than prose. An officer of the General Staff is quoted as saying that during the operations of the past year work was commenced in the office, or on the train, when G.H.Q. was advanced nearer the battle-line.
