About this book
The title page calls the book Fictitious and Symbolic Creatures in Art, with special reference to their use in British heraldry, by John Vinycomb, London, 1906, and a caption naming St. George and the Dragon. The preface says it will describe and illustrate the fictitious and symbolic creatures found in British heraldry, including beings whose existence the senses cannot show and exaggerations and combinations of natural forms handed down from the Middle Ages.
One passage traces such figures to fetishes, the monsters of mythology, medieval superstition and the visions of angels and seraphim, and credits classical fable with many of the animals heralds introduced into coats of arms. A passage on the unicorn says its horn, whenever examined, turns out to be a narwhal's tooth, and quotes Wood's Natural History. Another on the dolphin lists coins of Argos, Syracuse, Byzantium and Ægina, and notes the larkspurs called delphiniums.
