About this book
Our Greatest Battle (The Meuse-Argonne) is by Frederick Palmer. A note headed “To the Reader” says that America in France was written, while the war was still expected to last through the summer of 1919, to describe the gathering and training of the American Expeditionary Forces.
The text says the British were four months in preparing for their thrust on the basis of nearly two years’ training in active warfare. The text says the Germans knew the British attack was coming and that their army was in the prime of its numbers and efficiency. The text tells of engineers building a footbridge who were greeted by bursts of machine-gun fire, and of parts of two companies that got across and started out to envelop Saint-Juvin. The text says General Wright objected when the Fifth Corps gave an order that the 1st take over the 89th’s place.
