About this book

Nate Marshall centers Black vernacular speech as a source of cultural memory, intimacy and future possibility. The poems examine how language relates to racial exclusion, gender, family survival and the stories a nation tells about itself. Taking its title from an expression of intention, the collection considers both the harm words can carry and the possibilities they can open.
