About this book
R. Eivind retells Finnish legends for English children, with seven illustrations, in a book dated London 1893. A tale called Aino's Fate begins with Aino going to the forest to gather birch shoots and tassels.
The speech is old-fashioned, with thee and thou. In one tale a fish tells Wainamoinen that she is Youkahainen's youngest sister, Aino, and dives out of sight when he begs her to return. He drags the waters of Lapland and Kalevala with his nets but never catches her, and his mother wakes from her tomb to speak to him. In another, Lemminkainen comes to the house of Louhi, where her husband sits in the guest-room, and Lemminkainen says that his father is Lempo.
