About this book

Three princes fire arrows from a tower to decide where they will seek wives, and the youngest follows his arrow to a lake. There he meets a talking frog who proposes marriage. Their father, an ageing king, tests his sons' choices by asking each bride to produce a carpet and then a cake. The frog summons magical helpers, turning household tasks into trials of powers that her puzzled husband has yet to understand.

A. J. Gliński's Polish Fairy Tales brings together stories of princes, enchanted creatures and objects with unusual powers. The 1920 edition names Maude Ashurst Biggs as translator and Cecile Walton as illustrator. Dialogue and short songs give the opening tale its rhythm, while a later scene sends Prince Dobrotek flying across seas and forests on a magical horse. The collection offers readers interested in Polish folklore a variety of royal contests, transformations and encounters with dangerous magicians.
