About this book

Folk Tales from the Russian is retold by Verra Xenophontovna Kalamatiano de Blumenthal. The foreword says that in Russia, as elsewhere in the world, folklore is rapidly scattering before the practical spirit of modern progress. The foreword adds that the traveling peasant bard or story teller, and the devoted nyanya, the beloved nurse of many a generation, are rapidly dying out.

A tale tells of a frog who turns into Vassilissa, the wise maiden, and calls on nurses and faithful waitresses to weave a silk rug like the one she used to sit upon in the palace of the king, her father. Another story has Thomas ask the Simpleton to go to the grave for him, and when the church clock strikes midnight the grave opens and the old man comes out. One story names Father Frost, the almighty sovereign at that place, clad in furs, and a sweet girl left alone, broken-hearted and terror-stricken, who repeated fervently all the prayers she knew.
