About this book
First Love, and Other Stories is by Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev, translated from the Russian by Isabel F. Hapgood. The preface says the author prized the fidelity to actuality of a purely intimate story, and the personal recollections of early youth. In one scene a voice near the speaker asks, Is it permissible to stare like that at strange young ladies?
The speaker, pursued by ringing but not malicious laughter, runs to his own room. In a conversation, a speaker names a historian, Evsiukóff, Stepán Stepánitch, who is interesting himself in Russian history from the most ancient times, and says there is in the town an ancient Swedish cannon-ball. A narrator says he thanked the old man, ordered his tarantás to be harnessed, and set off for Byéleff.
