About this book

Knock, Knock, Knock and Other Stories is by Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev, translated from the Russian by Constance Garnett. The contents list Knock, Knock, Knock, The Inn, Lieutenant Yergunov's Story, The Dog and The Watch.

A story headed Knock, Knock, Knock A Study has listeners settling down in a circle, and their good friend Alexandr Vassilyevitch Ridel begins to tell a story. A narrator says he was living at the time in Petersburg and had only just left the University, and that his brother was a lieutenant in the horse-guard artillery. A man named Tyeglev promises to show a pebble that had saved his grandfather and that he had mounted into a medallion. A man is described with a lean gipsy face, thick black eyebrows and moustache, black eyes and a hooked nose, and the text mentions three silver buttons gleaming distinctly in the moonlight.

Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev

Ivan Turgenev (1818-1883) was a Russian novelist and playwright, the first of his countrymen to win a wide European readership. A friend of Flaubert and Henry James, he wrote with a spare lyricism, and his Fathers and Sons remains a landmark of the nineteenth-century novel.
