About this book
The Diary of a Superfluous Man, and Other Stories is a book by Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev, translated from the Russian by Isabel F. Hapgood. The preface quotes a well-known Russian critic who says that in The Diary of a Superfluous Man we have to deal with the end of the pathological process upon the body of Russian society.
The speaker says that the residence was removed to Moscow after the death of a father for a very simple reason: all the estate was sold under the hammer for debt, with the exception of one wretched little hamlet. The speaker says that with the park are bound up the sole bright memories, among them the burial of a best friend, an old dog with a bob tail and crooked paws. A speaker begs Naúm Ivánitch not to take that sin on the soul, and Naúm answers that he would not let the man go, since the man would set him on fire again to-morrow.
