About this book
This is a narrative of a river journey in boats through canyon country, by John Wesley Powell. A chapter heading reads "From the Mouth of the Uinta River to the Junction of the Grand and Green," and the entries are dated, as in July 6 and July 13.
In the entries the party lets its boats down the rapids on lines, makes a short portage around the worst places, and camps on a sand beach where a hurricane of wind sifts sand over the blankets. One entry mentions a hunter and Indian trader named Johnson, who invited the party to help themselves to corn and vegetables he planned to plant on an island. Another records a tradition among local tribes about a great light seen on one of the Temples. In one passage the canyon grows much narrower and the boats spin from side to side.
