About this book
The Romance of the Colorado River by Frederick Samuel Dellenbaugh recounts discovery in 1840 and later explorations, with special reference to Powell's voyages through the line of the great canyons. The account of the Explorer's arrival at Yuma describes a craft lightened as far as possible, but still drawing two and one-half feet and catching on snags.
The description of ancient dwellings records both completely ruined buildings and others in fair preservation, with their inhabitants long gone. Stanton resolves to stay and finish the work as far as possible despite most of the men's wish to abandon the enterprise immediately and entirely.
