About this book

Scientific observation and the demands of river travel meet in John Wesley Powell's account of the Colorado country. Published in 1895, the book expands a journal kept in camp on strips of brown paper and bound in leather. Powell's preface explains how requests for a public account led him to enlarge that record with chapters describing the region and its inhabitants.

The dated entries make the work of exploration concrete. Rocks obstruct the channel, boats must be carried around rapids, and the Emma Dean spins in a whirlpool, losing an oar. A stop for repairs includes attention to both boats and barometers. Alongside these tasks, Powell describes flood marks, driftwood lodged above the river, and pools within rounded chambers of a side canyon. Readers interested in geography and early field science can follow how the physical struggle to move downstream becomes a means of observing the landscape.
