About this book
Beside a trout stream in Franconia, New Hampshire, an old fisherman begins teaching two boys how to handle their lines. The narrator remembers that meeting as the start of a friendship with James Whitcher, known as Fishin' Jimmy. Annie Trumbull Slosson's short story follows the narrator's growing understanding of a man whose knowledge of plants, birds and mountain waters comes from years spent fishing.
Jimmy treats his favorite pastime as a guide to patience, kindness and faith. In his own country speech, he explains how the boats, nets and shores of the Gospel stories make Christian teaching familiar to him. Close descriptions of brookside plants and woodland creatures share the page with these personal reflections.
