Annie Trumbull Slosson

Annie Trumbull Slosson developed two notable careers, writing regional fiction while also pursuing entomology and collecting specimens. Her stories often use New England speech, belief, and community life to reveal the dignity or eccentricity of people overlooked by more conventional narratives. Aunt Liefy appeared in the early 1890s, while White Christopher followed around the beginning of the twentieth century. Both works belong directly to Slosson’s local-color writing. Her scientific interests also entered her literary world, where close attention to plants, insects, and landscape could support characterization rather than merely decorate a setting. Aunt Liefy and White Christopher represent the compact, observant storytelling for which Slosson became known. Together they invite readers into communities shaped by oral expression, religious feeling, natural detail, and lives whose apparent simplicity often conceals unusual conviction or imaginative depth.
