About this book
Fishing platforms, village debts and the rush of the Ottawa River shape the opening of Edward William Thomson's Canadian story collection. Ma'ame Paradis, an elderly fisherwoman, recalls a dispute over her family's access to a platform. Savarin claims the fishing rights after buying the land, and rent demands, court fines and store accounts turn a local custom into a struggle over money and authority.
The stories combine descriptions of river life with dialogue that represents local speech. Elsewhere, little Baptiste watches a damaged timber raft send planks downstream, offering him the chance to earn money by bringing them ashore. These scenes give readers a close view of fishing, timber work and the pressure of household needs.
