About this book

Joel and David Pepper are away at a boys' boarding school in this 1903 story by Margaret Sidney, while Polly goes to Miss Salisbury's school for girls. The preface explains that the earlier Pepper books had no room for the daily fun and study of school life, so this volume supplies it.

It opens with trouble in the dormitory: a rival boy hides Joel's new tennis racket before an important match, and Joel has to cope with the consequences. The chapters that follow cover a tennis match, a narrow escape, a picnic, an accident, a poor brakeman's family, club meetings, a grand entertainment, a play and a garden party.

Jasper, Percy and Van join the Peppers at school, and a teacher, Miss Salisbury, tells the girls a story from her own girlhood. Readers who know the earlier Pepper books will meet the family again, and newcomers can start here, with children's friendships, quarrels and kindnesses at the centre.
