About this book
The prefatory note describes an account of flags of different nations, ancient and modern, with notices of their use in naval warfare and otherwise. The discussion of ancient standards says nations bore standards or banners and carried them in battle from the earliest times covered by authentic records.
The account attributed to Diodorus says Egyptian standards generally consisted of figures of sacred animals carried on the end of a staff or spear. The description of Bolivia's flag identifies a volcano, suggested in all probability by the great volcano of Serhama in Western Bolivia. The description of Japan's flag identifies its adopted emblem as the sun rising blood-red.
