About this book

The first good snow brings the children of Harmony Village onto the sledding hills, where friendship and the urge to prove one's courage share the track. Jack Minot is generous and cheerful, while his friend Janey Pecq, nicknamed Jill, insists on trying a dangerous slope after a boy challenges her daring. Louisa May Alcott's 1880 village novel places these lively children among schoolmates, siblings and mothers in a New England community.

Everyday disagreements carry weight alongside the outdoor fun. A later school episode finds Jack facing punishment, his older brother Frank pressing him for an explanation, and Mrs. Minot responding with patience. Jill's sympathy adds another view of loyalty when a friend is in trouble. The story offers readers a close look at childhood pride, family judgment and the difference between scolding and understanding, through conversations and small incidents that make village life feel personal.
