About this book

A drunken prank at Balliol costs Walter de Brydde a year away from college and sends him towards a very different life. Robert William MacKenna opens this historical novel with Walter standing on Devorgilla's bridge in Dumfries in April 1685, recalling the misconduct that brought him there. Scotland's Covenanters and the dangers of their time provide the setting for a story combining adventure and love.

Walter tells his own story, with a rueful eye for youthful foolishness and a close attention to the Scottish landscape. In a later scene, he shelters beside a loch, hopes to return to Mary and the household at Daldowie, and struggles across the moor with an injured limb. The sight of mounted troopers forces him into hiding. Readers will find a personal account of danger and affection, with quiet scenes of hills and water set against the immediate fear of discovery.
