About this book

Childhood games beside the Dee and Ken already carry the fear of royal troopers in William Gordon's account of Galloway. He remembers his cousin Maisie Lennox, quarrels with his elder brother Sandy, and a ride with his father through the wooded country around Earlstoun. S. R. Crockett places these family memories within a historical adventure about Scotland's Covenanters in the seventeenth century, giving public conflict the scale of a child's familiar landscape.

As the narrative moves into danger, the same home country becomes a place of guarded gates and urgent risks. In one scene, William slips into Earlstoun's well-house while a sentry leaves his post, seeking water before illness leaves him unable to move. Told in the first person, with Scots expressions and closely observed terrain, the novel offers readers a view of religious struggle through household ties, physical hardship, and personal recollection.
