About this book
The first tale, Life's Secret, begins with a king who has two queens, Duo and Suo, and no children. A Faquir, a mendicant, comes to the palace gate to ask for alms and offers the Suo queen a drug, saying she will have a son who will be called Dalim Kumar and will have a complexion the colour of the pomegranate flower. Another passage has a woman disguised as a female barber, with her two boys, standing at the palace gate and asking to see the Suo queen.
In one passage a king is received by Postomani, who tells him she is neither the daughter of the Rishi nor a Brahmani girl and is bound to wash the feet of a guest; the scene is set out as dialogue between King and Postomani. In another, the minister's son, the prefect's son and the merchant's son climb a tree while the king's son pronounces words he learned from a hermit, looking at a lifeless tiger.
