About this book

A troubled prince faces a court where private feeling can become a matter of state. Friedrich Schiller's five-act verse play opens in the royal gardens at Aranjuez, with Don Carlos resisting the questions of Domingo, his father's confessor. Carlos believes that his movements and words are watched, while his strained relationship with King Philip complicates his feelings about Queen Elizabeth, once his betrothed and now his stepmother.

The arrival of his friend, the Marquis of Posa, brings the suffering of Flanders into this tense family setting. Posa appeals to the prince's earlier hopes for freedom, connecting personal loyalty with public responsibility. In a later scene, Philip challenges the motives of advisers who offer damaging accusations and searches for a person he can trust. Through formal speeches, pointed exchanges and stage directions, the play explores the difficulty of finding honest counsel within royal power. This English translation offers readers a drama of friendship, suspicion and political conscience.

About the author

Friedrich Schiller

Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805) was a German poet, playwright, and historian, and with Goethe a founder of Weimar classicism. His dramas of freedom and moral struggle, and his Ode to Joy set to music by Beethoven, made him one of the most beloved writers in the German language.
