About this book
The Post Office is a play by Rabindranath Tagore, translated from Bengali by Devabrata Mukherjee. The list of characters includes Madhav, Amal, who is an adopted child, Sudha, a little flower girl, a Doctor, a Dairyman, a Watchman, a Gaffer, a Village Headman, a King's Herald and a Royal Physician. Act I is set in Madhav's house.
Madhav is anxious about the boy's health while a physician quotes scriptures at him. He tells Gaffer how the child came into his home: he is the son of a man related to Madhav's wife by village ties, and he has lost both his mother and his father. Amal talks with Sudha about picking flowers, and she answers that her mother Sasi is a flower-seller and that she must weave garlands every day. A State Physician asks for the doors and windows to be opened, and Amal says that his pain is gone and that he can see the stars.
