About this book

Footprints in the Forest is by Edward S. Ellis, whose other titles named on the title page include "Ned in the Block-House" and "The Lost Trail." The contents give chapter titles such as "A Valuable Ally," "The Camp of the Strangers," "Shawanoe vs. Pawnee" and "In the Tree-Top," and one chapter is titled "Jack and Hay-uta."

In one passage Deerfoot, a Shawanoe, questions Hay-uta, a Sauk, about four warriors who went off with a man named Otto, asking about their dress and looks. Hay-uta says they were taller and more powerful than Sauks and wore plainer, darker clothing. In another, Jack jokes with Deerfoot that some writer may one day put him in story books, and Hay-uta comes forward to shake hands with Jack. In a third, Deerfoot fits an arrow to his bow when a Pawnee turns on the Sauk who had befriended him.
