About this book
Deerfoot in The Mountains is the third of three Deerfoot books listed on its title pages, published in Philadelphia in 1905 with eight engravings by J. Steeple Davis. The introductory matter places the adventures in the time when Lewis and Clark were making their expedition.
In a snowball contest, the Shawanoe Deerfoot outlasts Mul-tal-la and the brothers George and Victor, who throw down their snowballs in surrender. The four then reach the Nez Perce village where they had left their horses, and the journey to the Blackfoot country goes on by land. One chapter is titled Lost, Strayed or Stolen. Elsewhere George and Victor talk about how they might have spent the winter, and the text mentions a cabin belonging to Jack Halloway and a home where the brothers sleep in a bed.
