About this book

Footsteps of Dr. Johnson (Scotland) follows a tour whose beginning is dated Friday, August 6th, 1773, when Dr. Johnson set off from London for the Western Islands of Scotland. Robert Chambers, Principal of New Inn Hall, Oxford, accompanies the traveller as far as Newcastle while going to his native town to take leave of his family. The two friends travel in a post-chaise, a pleasure the account says was too costly for the traveller to enjoy often without someone to share the expense.

The conversation with Mr. Macaulay turns on whether people can sincerely profess good principles when their practice fails to match those professions. The reported reply from Dr. Johnson insists that a man may be sincere in good principles without having good practice.
