About this book

Hoping to glimpse the strange activity in a distant valley, a mountain girl climbs to a great pine and watches an unfamiliar traveler approach. John Fox's 1908 novel places its love story in the Cumberland Mountains, among steep trails, wooded ravines and people wary of outsiders. The opening follows both the girl watching from cover and the young traveler whose fascination with the solitary tree brings him to the same spot.

Later scenes show June eager for school and knowledge of life beyond Lonesome Cove. Uncle Billy asks about Hale, concerned about his intentions, while young Dave Tolliver watches June and resents Hale's visits. June challenges Dave over his spying. Local speech, family loyalties and talk of a feud give these personal tensions a wider setting. Readers interested in American regional fiction can find a closely observed mountain landscape alongside a story of affection, suspicion and changing expectations.
