About this book
The introduction describes emperors and popes adding fountains or building and repairing aqueducts to increase the supply of water available to the Roman populace. The account of Pope Symmachus describes a fountain with a square tabernacle, red porphyry columns and a dome made of gilt bronze. The account calls the fountain of Pope Symmachus the first recorded fountain in the history of St. Peter’s.
The fountain description places gilt bronze peacocks, dolphins and flowers on the architraves, with jets of water flowing into the basin below. The discussion of Sixtus V says that painting, sculpture and architecture were to serve the glory of God, particularly as he understood and expounded that glory.
