About this book
The preface to The Architecture of Provence and the Riviera says frequent journeys impressed the author with the variety and abundance of Provence's ancient architectural monuments. The architectural discussion says Northern France's various styles have many points of resemblance to styles on the other side of the channel. The description of the western portal of St Trophime at Arles calls the portal well preserved and notes its apparent addition before the plainer nave wall.
The author disputes the usual account of the portal's date, believing the portal more likely to belong to an older building preserved during reconstruction of the nave. The description of Eza places the old town and castle on a lofty peak and describes a steep, winding approach with a rough and sometimes barely visible track.
