About this book

Venice and Its Story recounts the position of a young state between Lombards or Franks and Pope in the west and the Byzantine Emperor in the east. An election account describes the chosen person being carried to church, entering barefoot, and swearing to govern according to the laws and work for the people's good.

The Signory answers Julius' demand for restitution by declaring that the territory will never be restored, even at the cost of selling the foundations of its houses. A gondola journey brings lagoons, islands and mainland villages into view as gondoliers urge the travellers along the channels with rhythmic strokes.
