About this book
The Story of Siena and San Gimignano, by Edmund G. Gardner, is intended in its preface to provide a popular history of the great Republic of Siena. The account of the battle describes Florentine burghers standing around the Carroccio and the standards, resisting to the last and falling in their places. The account says that a number of fugitives took refuge in the little castle of Montaperto and held out until later in the day.
The political narrative describes Alessandro beginning to build a fortress on the hill of San Domenico, at the suggestion of the Medicean rulers of Florence and with their financial aid. The political narrative names Mario Bandini and Girolamo Severini as the leaders of the Libertini, who saw an opportunity to deliver the Republic.
