About this book
Fowler's Household Helps, by Arthur L. Fowler, describes itself as Over 300 Useful and Valuable Helps About the Home, carefully compiled and arranged in convenient form for frequent use, with a complete index. A note in the book says that while the author does not guarantee the reliability of these household helps, they have been carefully compiled from reliable sources and are believed to be efficient if directions are carefully followed. The cooking advice says to allow about 10 minutes for steak if one inch thick, and 15 minutes if one and one-half inches thick. The text says to place fish on the rack, skin side down, and do not turn.
For sewing-machine oil spots, one remedy is to wet the spots with spirits of turpentine and wash out with cold water and toilet soap. One tip says that a small, inexpensive flashlight should be kept in the sewing machine drawer. The index lists entries such as Hands, Chapped, To Prevent and Hands, To Remove Fish Odor from.
