About this book

Alphonse Daudet's Le Petit Chose (Histoire d'un Enfant) is presented as Part I, Le Petit Chose en Province, adapted and edited by S. Tindall. The prefatory note says two new appendices appear in this volume, one of them Questionnaires, which are not meant to usurp the teacher’s freedom in viva voce practice of the language.

The narrator describes a factory that slowly emptied, saying "petit à petit, les ateliers se vidèrent" (little by little, the workshops emptied), and adds "C’était fini, nous étions ruinés" (it was over, we were ruined). One speaker, addressing "mon petit Daniel", tells him to hurry to Paris, work well and try to be a man. A passage marked as from Nicholas Nickleby speaks of every young and healthy feeling flogged and starved down.

Alphonse Daudet

Alphonse Daudet was a French novelist and storyteller whose comic observation and affection for southern France gave his work a distinctive regional character. Letters from My Windmill gathers tales associated with Provence, mixing village life, folklore, travel, tenderness, and satire in a collection first issued complete in 1869.
