About this book

Jack is by Alphonse Daudet, translated by Mary Neal Sherwood. The contents list names chapters called, among others, Vaurigard, The School in the Avenue Montaigne, Mâdou, The Reunion, and A Dinner with Ida. Jack, the text says, loved but one person on the face of the earth, his mother, and thought her absolutely perfect.

Jack cries out in indignation that Madame Constant is not his mamma but his nurse. The text describes a street bordered with houses on both sides, where the buildings become farther and farther apart as the child slowly toils on. Jack is troubled, and each step he takes leads him further from Paris.
