On a sprawling Southern California rancho, Frank Nelson and his cousin Archie watch two skilled cattlemen struggle to bring a runaway steer into a pen. Harry Castlemon's juvenile adventure begins with the practical workings of Mr. Winters's property of sixteen thousand acres: roaming herds, branding, horses and the use of lassos. Frank takes responsibility for the ranch during his uncle's absence, while Archie's lively excitement gives the opening scene a more playful rhythm.
The boys' outdoor adventures also become tests of character. During a hunting episode, Arthur Vane's impressive boasts collapse when alarming sounds from the bushes send him fleeing. Frank and Archie must judge the difference between claims of courage and actions under pressure.
