About this book

Frank, Alec and Sam reach Mr Ross's hunting lodge on the Nelson River, ready to spend a year in northern Canada. Their host is a retired Hudson Bay Company official whose accounts of animals and outdoor adventure persuaded the boys to seek their parents' consent. The opening retraces their passage aboard the Prince Arthur, past drifting icebergs and floating ice, with a seal hunt and trading encounters on the way to Hudson Bay.

Egerton Ryerson Young's novel for young readers combines friendship, canoe travel and the excitement of learning outdoor skills. On a later outing, Alec accepts Mustagan's challenge to compare a gun with a bow and arrow, then admires the hunter's accurate shot at a flying duck. Readers interested in northern adventure will find detailed descriptions of boats, wildlife and hunting, alongside the boys' eagerness and their host's knowledge of the country.
