About this book
Overtones, a Book of Temperaments is by James Huneker. The title page names Richard Strauss, Parsifal, Verdi, Balzac, Flaubert, Nietzsche, and Turgénieff. A chapter headed “Flaubert and His Art” calls Gustave Flaubert indeed the Beethoven of French prose.
The book says that music can give the sense of motion and is par excellence the art of narration. A list of episodes includes the adventure with the windmills, the victorious battle against the host of the great emperor Alifanfaron, and dialogues of Knight and Squire. A discussion of Sister Teresa says that Mr. Moore has only used Huysmans as a spring-board for his narration of Sister Teresa’s doings in conventual seclusion.
