About this book

Frederick Chopin, as a Man and Musician is by Frederick Niecks, in two volumes, third edition (1902). The contents list prefaces to the first, second and third editions, a proem titled Poland and the Poles, an epilogue and appendices.

The text says that outraged Poland rose to free itself from the galling yoke and fought under the noble Kosciuszko, that in the third partition (October 24, 1795) each of the three powers took her share, and that Poland ceased to exist as an independent state. The text asks how Nicholas Chopin fared while these whirlwinds passed over Poland, and says that the effect on the Frenchman's tobacco manufactory was so disastrous that it had to be closed. The text says that Madame Dudevant proceeded to Paris, and that the conditions she demanded were her daughter, permission to pass twice three months every year in Paris, and an allowance of 250 francs per month during the time of her absence from Nohant.
