About this book
From Peking to Mandalay, by Reginald Fleming Johnston, describes a journey from North China to Burma through Tibetan Ssuch'uan and Yunnan, with a map and illustrations. The account of Mount Omei describes monasteries built as humble wooden bungalows and says that few surviving buildings can boast of antiquity.
The traveller observes visiting monks producing identification papers and having them stamped with the seals of the monasteries visited during their pilgrimages. The explanation says the monks travel to gain merit for themselves and their religious communities, making authenticated certificates of completed pilgrimage important on their return. The description of cave-dwellings records a cave near a monastery converted from its original uses, whatever those were, into a Buddhist chapel with an altar, bell and images.
