About this book
R. F. Johnston wrote this account as District Officer and Magistrate at Weihaiwei, in a volume dated 1910 with a map and illustrations. The preface speaks of the meeting-place of the British Lion and the Chinese Dragon in northern China, and the book is dedicated to Sir James Haldane Stewart Lockhart, Commissioner of Weihaiwei. A caption describes a view from the city wall showing the walled city, the island of Liukung, the harbour and Port Edward.
Johnston describes the countryside: streams lined with willows, scrub-oak on the mountain slopes, wheat-fields and harvesters, and a want of both forest and running water. He names the Shantung Promontory, east of the harbour. One passage describes a burial rite in which each mourner adds a handful of earth at the graveside. Another remarks that the whole of the Japanese Empire might be packed into one of China's provinces.
