About this book
The title presents fruits of the Hawaiian Islands, and the illustrated edition pairs half-tone plates with descriptions of the subjects represented. The index lists fruits including avocado, pomegranate and fig, using botanical names beside common names to identify the entries.
The description of the mango tree notes a resinous fragrance suggesting turpentine in all its parts and thick, shiny leaves. The mango’s greenish, scented flowers grow in large terminal panicles, followed three or four months later by large, kidney-shaped fruit with smooth, rather soft, pale-green skin tinted yellow and red. The description of the large seed gives its length as nearly that of the fruit, its shell as rough and fibrous, and its kernel as bean-shaped.
