About this book
The cherries of New York by U. P. Hedrick discusses cherry characteristics in preparation for the classification and description of species and varieties. The discussion distinguishes species and varieties by ripening time, noting considerable variation in dates and keeping quality that is scarcely taken into account and varies chiefly with firmness of flesh. The account treats colourless or red juice as a clear dividing line in both species and varieties.
The description of Wragg identifies it as either English Morello or a strain of that variety, while allowing that the older sort may have been substituted. Pomologists in Iowa, where the new variety is most largely grown, claim that Wragg is distinct and an improvement on English Morello.
