About this book
The Itinerary of Archbishop Baldwin through Wales, by Giraldus Cambrensis, begins with an introduction on Gerald the Welshman, born probably in 1147 at Manorbier Castle in the county of Pembroke. It names his father William de Barri, his mother Angharad, her father Gerald de Windsor and his wife Princess Nesta, and recalls Rhys ap Tewdwr.
The introduction goes on to Gerald's livings and his post as Archdeacon of Brecon in 1175, and to the chapter's nomination of him for St. David's, which the king viewed with unease. In another passage someone in a household supplies whatever the master and mistress have in mind and asks why they fear to spend a heap of gold or silver. Footnotes discuss the Maw, Traeth Mawr and Merddin Wyllt, Merddin the Wild, with Ambrosius and Sylvestris.
