Mary E. Blain's book is a collection of games for groups of players. Its preface begins with a line about a merry heart and argues that the wish to play belongs to everyone, not only to children, and that grown people are too quick to put it aside.
The games are described one by one under their names. In Hunt the Ring, players hold a knotted string with a ring threaded on it in a circle while a hunter in the center tries to find who holds the ring. In Hot Tamales a knotted handkerchief is tossed from player to player. Hunt the Slipper casts the children as cobblers who pass a shoe along, and in Spin the Plate each player takes the name of a month. Another game has each child in turn jump over candles set out for the months of the year.
