About this book

Dolls, snow games and bamboo toys give Matilda Chaplin Ayrton a way to explain everyday life in Japan to young readers. Her illustrated account combines observations of homes and festivals with Japanese tales, including stories called Fishsave and The Filial Girl. An introduction connects familiar objects such as fans and dolls with the makers, households and celebrations that give them meaning. The doll festival receives particular attention, with treasured figures displayed beside sweets and miniature utensils.

The sections on play describe children carrying one another on a bamboo pole, building small festival carts and cooking batter in shapes at street stalls. William Elliot Griffis contributes an account of games and sports and explains his changes for American readers in the preface. Read today, the book offers a historical view of childhood through practical details of clothing, toys and shared amusements, alongside the author's comparisons between Japanese and Western customs.
