About this book
Optical tricks, misjudged distances, false recognition of objects and other errors of the senses and the mind are the subject of James Sully's study, here in its third edition of 1887. He aims at a strictly scientific treatment: describing and sorting acknowledged illusions, then explaining them through their physical and mental causes. The contents separate illusion from hallucination and divide illusions into four kinds, taking perception first. The closing pages point out where the psychology leads on to philosophy.
