About this book
The Farmer Boy, and How He Became Commander-In-Chief is a book edited by William M. Thayer. The introduction recalls a promise, made in the preface of The Printer Boy, that the next volume should be The Farmer Boy; or, How George Washington became President, and says that pledge has never been redeemed. A portrait of Uncle Juvinell calls him stout and well-rounded, with an unbroken smile of fun, good-humor, and love, so that you could hardly help half believing that he must be a twin-brother of Santa Claus.
The text says that although Braddock held these allies in high contempt, he was persuaded, for that one time at least, to treat them with marked respect and distinction. In one scene a person who chose an apple at hap-hazard misses his chair and keels over, and all the little folks fairly scream with laughter, in which even Uncle Juvinell cannot help joining right heartily.
