About this book
The book is Gilbertus Anglicus, Medicine of the Thirteenth Century, by Henry E. Handerson. The contents list, among others, an Explanatory Foreword, a Biography and Resolutions of the Cleveland Medical Library Ass'n.
A man is said to have volunteered on June 17, 1861 in the Stafford Guards, which became company B of the 9th Regiment of Louisiana Volunteers, Confederate States of America. Handerson is said to have experienced the adventures and trials of a soldier's life, knowing picket, scouting, and skirmishing duty, the bivouac, the attack and defense in battle formation, the charge, the retreat, hunger and thirst. Gilbert tells of the antecedent causes of gout: a heat too solvent, cold too constringent, sometimes a strong bath or a severe journey in a plethoric person. The text quotes advice that if the stone is very large, it should be simply pushed up to the fundus of the bladder and left there, and no effort should be made to extract it.
