About this book

In a poor London street behind Westminster, Sue brings food home to her younger brother Giles, whose limited mobility keeps him in their upstairs room. He listens to Big Ben for comfort while she finds encouragement in the preaching of Father John. Their conversation sets the tone for L. T. Meade's children's novel: practical care and Christian hope meet the pressures of poverty, illness and daily work.

A diamond locket later puts Sue at risk of being blamed for a theft. Her greatest fear is what separation would mean for Giles, who depends on her support. Pickles, a resourceful boy with red hair, urges her to hide while they seek the real culprit. Street dialogue, anxious decisions and the bond between the siblings give this story its interest for readers of children's fiction about London life and family responsibility.
